Me quiero. Mis gordas. Lindas. Lindas todas. Lindos todos. Espirales, esferas, bacilos, comas. Punto.

No mucho.

Chicken n' Box

Chickenpox.
Got it.
It's out there.  Somewhere.
Beware...

I thought I would never get it. I thought it was an allergy. I thought I was Superwoman. I am locked in my tower and princesses bring me food. Flatmates. I look a bit like this:

Spiders

I can see them in the imaginarium of my mind.
Their thin black legs spread out like a hand.
Sometimes thick, dark.
Impossibly long-legged. Sharp.
In old spaces. In melancholic rooms disused by time.
I see them sometimes. Outside.
On windows and porches.
I see them in gardens,
hanging on invisible bridges between plants.
I see them on palms of brave hands.
I see them one, two, three climbing
spiders in a song.
I see them too menacing for lullaby.

This Perfect Life - Take Two

My perfect life.
Take Two.
Brand new.
Same old. Same old.
Exciting. For a bit. There. Not anymore. No. Same old. Same shit.
My perfect life.
Today. Yesterday.
Imperfect in places, not new. Never new. Not now. Not anymore. Gone. Already. Gone.
Bye Bye.
So it goes. There is goes, imperfect. Human, life.
Human.
Imperfect always.
Claws, jawbone, bone cage full of hopes.
Empty windowsill.
Theatre place. Market place. Stupid pseudonym. Dance. A choir of ghosts. Papertowel. Just a mess.
All.
My perfect life. Take two.
Action…
And he sits and he sighs.
And distractedly she looks. In a mirror. A pigeon flies south. Not a duck, nor a goose this time.
He sits and he ponders. He makes a mess with a tiny spoon in a cup of coffee.
Stir stir stir. Make a mess. Stir. Stir.
Sugar not included. Batteries not included. Instructions not included. Truth not included.
Action.
This perfect life.
Ah, sighs a paper tree, a mess, a pigeon, a dance of geese flying south.
Cut.

Cut now.

My Perfect Life-

(For Eddy)

My perfect life.
Dreamt somewhere south.
Centre stage, left. Enters him.
My perfect life.
Imaginary encounters, train stations and posters on walls.
Imaginary cups of coffee, morning rituals, teeth brushing, three eggs on a pan.

Omelet.

My imaginary lie.
Ten thirty, shower time. Ten fifty four, pot of fruit, tv time.
He sits, he tries, he rests his head, he sighs.
My perfect life.
North Williamsburg of somewhere impossible.
Your nest. Your head. Against mine.
Your heart. Not here. Not awake. Now.
No, not now. Not yet.

Maybe. Now?

My perfect life. Was it?
Spanish lessons  before bed-time.
Orange juice. Berry. Elevator. Taxi ride. Theatre making. Love making. Not. Now.
My eccentric lie. Lies ahead. Behind.
Cold breeze, cold hand. Cold stare. At a glance.
Rule of thumb.
If it doesn’t happen. Now.

My imaginary. Perfect, misused life.

EL

Sus manos.
Su piel. Suave.
Como la de un niño.
Su mirada sobria,
descripciones de uno mismo pretendiéndolas en otro.
Sus cosas.
Sus modalidades. Conjunciones. Verbos.
Sus aves del paraíso
y veleros volátiles.
Sus abreviaciones.
Sus pies descalzos sobre madera.
Sus olores, todos.
Sus horarios y sus terminantemente prohibidos.
Sus vidas pasadas.
Gestos varios.
Palpitaciones desmedidas.
Varios pares de zapatos.
Anti religiosidades mutuas.
Contradicciones absolutas.
Hojas verdes. Pájaros cantando.
Luz de medio día. Soleado.
Claro oscuro. Tarde.
Júpiter seguro de sí mismo.
Luna llena. Grande.
Cielo despejado.

Manos. Manos suaves.
Piel. Segura de sí misma.
Júpiter cantando.
Sentimientos llenos. Grandes.
Contradicciones volátiles.
Desmenuzadas.
Miedos.
Su mirada, como la de un niño.
Sus verbos descalzos sobre madera,
sus palpitaciones de medio día.

Cielo despejado.

A Recipe for Literary Analysis. Period.

Possible Plays to Complicate in an Essay
(A comprehensive list):

-Nocturnal Animals by Juan Mayorga
-The Golden Dragon by Roland Schimmelpfennig
-Crave by Sarah Kane
-Something Shakespearean (why not)
-Anything by me (say whaaaat?)

An Essay to Make Any Play Complex
(A recipe step by step (or something))

Ingredients:
-2 grams of a play chosen at random.

-2 medium eggs

-3 spoons of topographic disclosure and morphological interpretation.

-A can of apprehensive behavior (In water)

-3 cups of Extra Meaning signifying nothing.
(Make sure they are found in places nobody would have thought of,
and/or borderline between the dramatic and the subtle.)

-Una taza de Form and Structure (go figure...)

-A slice of pie.

For the Topping:

-1 liter of Point of View
(peel and cut in thin slices)
(yes we know it is in liquid form, but use   some imagination - hombre!)

-Some Imagination (finely chopped)

-Seventy Five seconds of character psychoanalysis

-A can of fish

Preparation method:

Mix the hard ingredients hasta formar una pasta, or until it is brown- depending on the 'Point

of View'. This can be done creatively or merely as an attempt at academic thinking.

Puuuurr the wet ingredients into the mix (A punto de nieve) (Or not)
If by now you need a dictionary, start again from the beginning but in the opposite direction.

Have a slice of pie and breathe in.

Surely there is some hidden meaning or interpretation there. Look closely and add the fish.

No, the author didn’t JUST have a stroke of creative flow, there MUST be a political motive,

psychological incoherence or formulaic mishap there somewhere. Milk it!

Add Form and Structure and whisk.

Whisk. Whisk. Whisk. Keep it up. Some more whisking.

Add some animals, if there are any in the play.

(Say... Parrots, for example)

Now mix this foamy batter with your apprehensive behavior et voila!

Place on a baking tray and bake for 45 minutes or until bored at 51 degrees,

32 minutes North Latitude. (If you’re in London)

Enjoy warm with a pot of ice cream- and digest (if you can).
Look at the piece from a distance and think for a moment if this is really what the author had

in mind.

(We're sorry we couldn't include pictures of the finished mess due to publishing rights.)

And the eggs???
If you decide to go ahead with this recipe, trust us, you will need them.

Of things unseen...

I went to a Travel Writing class. It was good.
But too much like journalism.
You need to vividly describe what you see.

But who- then, will describe what you can’t see?

Ellos

Se les observa melancólicos afuera – en grupo,
Escurridizos. Bajo la lluvia, incluso-
Apretando un tubito blanco que saca humo.
Exprimiendo.
Sujetando.
Jalando con la boca.
Tanto humo les cabe en los pulmones.
En la cabeza.

La mayoría triste.
Por quién sabe qué cosa.
Confundidos.

Añorando algo que todavía no se saben.
Algo, cualquier cosa.

Viven solos – acompañados, pero solos.
Incapacitados por ellos mismos.
Distraídos.
Divagantes.
Aturdidos.
Como caminantes somnolientos.
Enlaberintados.

Memento Mori

It’s like I can’t see.
Not like that- anymore.

It’s like when one grows up, one of the senses dies out.

I remember shadows having substance- shape.
Hours had meaning- sense.
Sounds.

Like another dimension.

All seems so… superficial now.
There’s that other world – of things unseen.
Where reason has little voice, but is always – awake.
Perhaps as a question.

Memento Mori.

Always.
Because everything spoke of death – somehow.
Of lives afterwards, of spirits, of memories of those who’d lived.
The walls kept echoes – voices – sighs.

You can still feel it inside the house – a sense of mystery – of memory not lost – of things once felt.
But everything is quiet now – subtle – almost not real – almost imagined.
Fear.

Spirits have gone to sleep – and the clock tic tacs meaningless hours, pointlessly reminding me that even though invisible – that world IS.
Somewhere.
Somehow.

And sometimes the memory of us will also be, even if we’re not.

Plans

Dear everyone,

Forever exists not.
Tomorrow we die.

Sad, I know.
Difficult, I know.
True, though.

Live.
Live today-
With the urgency of a fly.
Love, learn, feed your eyes, your brain, your body.
Feed yourselves life.
Feed others it too.

In case we run out-
In case we are soon to reach our expiry date.

On extinction.

Can we please keep the sharks?

And the polar bears, the frogs, the tuna, the elephants, the tigers, the belugas and the turtles, the gorillas, whales, dragons and devils, parrots and narwhals… Scheisse, we are running out…

Sometimes I run out of Nutella.
I love Nutella.
I don’t want to run out of it.
But I know that the next day I can go and buy another pot from the shop.
Imagine there was no more Nutella in the market and I was running out.

Shit.

I don’t want to ever be running out of something.

A Letter to Space

Mr. Don Pettit,
Node 2, Deck 5, ISS, LEO 51.603

Dear Don,
A letter…
“Perpetual Twilight”.
That is the name of my favorite blog post of all time.
You see, I wanted to be an astronaut as a child.
Didn’t we all?
I was obsessed with space travel, in constant fascination of MIR throughout my childhood.
Space travel-
Space exploration-
Exploration of the existential self in confined spaces.
Experimentation-
Zero Gravity-
Darkness-
A moment-
That moment-
Just a moment-
Of inexplicable beauty, of unworkable reason; an unfeasible once-in-a-lifetime glimpse of something impossible.
A bit like love.
Like that moment of perpetual twilight, almost impossible, almost not there…
It’s so fascinating, I want to hug it.
I didn’t fulfill on my wish of being an astronaut.
I am a scientist of plays; I engineer theatre pieces, short stories, films.
I am also into conservation, environmental sciences, sports, music, cheddar cheese and books.
My curiosity does not understand of limits, and who am I to stop it indulging in absurdities.
Absurdities for others, perhaps, but for us (my curiosity and me), it means life- understanding equals life.  Perhaps the sole reason for my existence is the questioning of these things.

Randy Paush said he just dreamt of the zero-gravity bit, I did not… not only.
I wanted to be an astronaut. I wanted to wear the kit, I wanted to be alone in space, reflecting on the fear it would give me to be alone in space reflecting on fear…- all by myself, floating above home, far from reach, and observe the earth, its lights, its roundness, its dimensions, its movement and everything outside of it, outside of myself, outside of anything my brain could describe.
I feel like I live my childhood dream through your eyes – somehow.
Zucchini talks to my heart; I root for sunflower’s wellbeing.
I was there when you grabbed little Dragon towards you, present.
I’ve participated of your experiments and games, your stories and your lack of plastic bags.
I now know how to pee in space, how to eat in space, how much toothpaste to use, how to talk to plants, how to listen to them. I now know how an eclipse looks from above, and I even know what Expedition or Increment I would like to belong to. I think I now qualify for Increment 31.
I almost feel like I know an astronaut.

My favorite astronaut of all time- just because you play with food (and channel sprouts)!
I thank you, from my bedroom on this fragment of intergalactic sediment – from this atom of universality…
I thank you for being my window, for allowing dreams to be proof-able, determined, tangible.
For allowing vastness to be spacious.
For forging knowledge, for inspiring discovery and discovering inspiration- in the everyday and in everything.
For taking care of the plants, for writing poems, stories, notes, letters.
A letter to you, my space bound friend, for being brave and cautious, and creative when you need to, for sharing with us-the dreamers on mother-ship earth who wait your return to hear more stories of unbelievable feats.
Space.
Empty space.
Never empty.
Always analyzed, observed, proud.
I hunt the skies for a glimpse of that metallic body that houses not only your physicality, but also your ideas, your dreams and the perfect poetry of sight that the outside has ignited in you.
The floating house.
The laboratory of dreams.
I can see through your eyes.
I gain understanding, freedom, inspiration. I am an astronaut. Here. Right now.

Now Earth awaits your landing.
Say your goodbyes to your sleep station. (Just for now)
My only concern now is…
Who will garden the plants?

From this dreamer and wishful member of Expedition 30/31, for Soyuz TMA-03M with call sign Antares,
From a bedroom on Earth,

                                                                         Sophia Mertins

I am not a writer. I am a victim.

I want to always be an expression of me. (The innermost me.)
I want my words to always be mine.
"Words are only words within a sentence.” That’s Virginia Woolf…
But this, this is my pen.
……….

As I child I wanted to be an astronaut.
No one- ever- told me: “I think space doesn’t go well with you.”
Perhaps because intuitively they know… they know that a part of us is galaxy, explosion, energy; a part of you, of me, of this pen, of the thought hitting the page like a wave on a rock… is also a star.
And a part of me is a billion years old- but another one is much older.
………

My pen woke up all aggressive.
It wants to write. Injured wrist and all.
Hand write.

………..

Something about constellations and words within a sentence and Virginia Woolf and a wave and… oh God… the synapse right there…
Ramon y Cajal would be delighted…. And so would be Freud…

………

I don’t care.
I don’t care, you see?
Today I don’t care.
Maybe tomorrow… my brain does its thing once more, but today, my God, today the wrist, the hand, the neuron firing… they’re all connected to something else- something not my own – yes also- but not exclusively.
Something shared…
There goes a whale in my imagination.
A toy.
A marching band.

This is crazy.
That’s what happens when it is in control.
I lose it.
I become an instrument of something.
For something.
I channel words, worlds, sentences, dots – that appear to be periods, commas, whales and marching bands.
A series of thoughts revolve above my head – not in it, no… outside of me.
I don’t choose them; they drop and continue moving, spiraling down all the way to the tip of the pen.
(yes, this was written in paper before

I am not a writer.
I am a victim.

I want to move freely.
Go to the toilet, have breakfast.
I can’t.
I am chained to a piece of paper.
This is ridiculous…

Help!

There goes the whale, there goes my childhood… astronaut missions in the living room, a play staged by my teddy bears (I directed), there goes something I don’t recognize…
Someone else’s childhood?

That thought is new…
Let me write it…
Down.

(Now it’s mine)

Period.

Grita Laura, grita.
